In 1876, the three richest men in America were Astor, Vanderbilt, and A. T. Stewart. How many people have ever heard of Stewart? In our last issue we quoted Stewart's 19th century "solution" to the current recession. We have recently noticed an interesting parallel between Stewart and H. Ross Perot. Although separated by more than 125 years, both had modest beginnings and went on to amass great wealth. Both were pressed by ego into entering public life, and both finally recognized the problems of political involvement. Stewart returned to business and making money until he died. And Perot? Written by Stephen N. Elias and entitled "ALEXANDER T. STEWART, The Forgotten Merchant Prince", the biography can be ordered directly from Praeger Publishers by calling (800)225-5800, Ext. 7254.
